History

The community got its name from Gen. William Lenoir, a Revolutionary War combatant and an early North Carolina politician. Gen. Lenoir began to build his fortified home in the Yadkin Valley in 1788. Construction was not completed until 1792. He referred to the stockade-like structure as "Fort Defiance," and the name has remained for over 200 years now. Lenoir never went to school, and yet he became a teacher at age 18. He also taught himself four languages. He later became a surveyor, and it was that occupation that brought him to the western reaches of North Carolina.
