Newton Area Guide

Welcome to the City of Newton! Newton, North Carolina is the county seat of Catawba County and has a population of approximately 12,000. Newton is located within a two-hour drive of Asheville, Winston-Salem and Charlotte and features the scenic rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Residents here enjoy a lush natural landscape, endless recreation options, and a mild climate all year long.

Newton became the county seat in 1845, was incorporated ten years later in 1855, and is now a part of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Residents are drawn here by the low cost of living, diverse cultures, and variety of entertainment, recreational and cultural activities to explore. The county has partnered with economic development organizations to identify and recruit new businesses into the area to supplement the traditional manufacturing industry found here, and job seekers have surely benefitted. With the availability of new jobs and great educational opportunities, Catawba County has been recognized as one of the top ten places in America to raise a family. 


Newton Parks and Recreation

Park TrailThe Newton Park and Recreation Department strives to improve the quality of life for Newton residents by offering recreational, educational and cultural programs throughout the year. The department also encourages health and wellness through its many open community spaces, beautiful parks, and excellent recreational facilities. Organized sports offered through the City include baseball, softball, football, tennis, and swimming just to name a few. The City has also added a new water slide and other improvements to the pool at the Newton Recreation Center, with more renovations being scheduled as well.

Newton Attractions and Events

Newton is home to many great attractions that are perfect for everyone in the family. Come visit the Catawba County Museum of History spend an evening enjoying the sounds of the Western Piedmont Symphony.

The Catawba County Museum pays tribute to the settlers of the Catawba River Valley and the folk art they created. The museum recognizes the unique furniture and textiles empire the settlers here created and are known for all over the world.

Catawba Science Center
The Catawba Science Center promotes an understanding of science and technology through a variety of educational programs, teaching collections, and exhibits that promote learning through interactive exploration. Permanent exhibits focus on physical, natural, and earth sciences, while other exhibits are rotated throughout the year. The freshwater and saltwater aquariums feature North Carolina’s only marine touch pool complete with live sharks and stingrays and offer a unique hands-on learning opportunity for Catawba residents and visitors.

United Arts Council of Catawba County
The United Arts Council was founded in 1960 and maintains the grounds of the SALT Block which is home to the Hickory Museum of Art, the Catawba Science Center, the Western Piedmont Symphony, the Hickory Choral Society and the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library.

Western Piedmont Symphony
The Western Piedmont Symphony holds active concert series at local churches, Lenoir-Rhyne University, and the Museum of Art and several other locations throughout the year. The String Quartet performs one concert each year in each of the elementary schools in our area. The Chamber Orchestra performs on 18 separate occasions throughout the year.
